Twelve

Returning from the lab, Charlie rounded the corner and saw them. Anne and Vince. The two were deep in conversation and when they spied her heading their way, Vince immediately put distance between them. Darn it if they didn’t look like a couple of lovesick schoolkids who’d been caught necking. Don’t go there, she told herself. After all, she had been the one to point out to Vince that her sister wasn’t a kid anymore. But she was still her baby sister. And she didn’t want to see her get hurt.

Feeling like a mother hen, she considered talking to Vince. And if he didn’t tell her to butt out, Anne would. This was Vince, she reminded herself. For years the man had been her closest friend, the brother she’d never had. He was a good guy. Sure, he carried some baggage from his divorce. But every divorced person that she knew carried baggage. It was part of who they were, a part of the life they had lived. She also knew that Vince hadn’t lacked for female company since his divorce. In fact, his girlfriends changed with such frequency she no longer bothered to ask their names. As for her sister, Anne was no helpless lamb. She had seen her sister cut more than one wolf down to size. And Vince sure beat some of those clowns she’d dated over the years. Besides, the two of them might actually work, she reasoned. If there was anyone who could get Vince Kossak to risk his heart again, it was Anne. Her sister’s bubbly personality and kind heart made it hard for anyone to resist her.

“What’s going on?” she asked as she reached them.

“Nothing much. Anne came by to see you,” Vince said.

“Vince was sweet enough to keep me company while I waited,” Anne said and there was no mistaking the gleam in her eye.

Vince yanked on his tie as though he were being choked. “I’m going to see if Mackenzie’s had any luck with the pawnshops on the jewelry.”

“Bye, Vince. I’ll see you Wednesday night,” Anne said.

“Right. See you,” he said and left.

“So what’s going on Wednesday night?” Charlie asked her sister.

“Vince and I have a date,” she said, angling her chin up defiantly. “I asked him to go to a Hornets game with me and he said yes.”

From her expression, it was clear Anne was expecting a reaction. Charlie didn’t give her one. She simply went over to her desk and picked up the file with the list of names that she’d received from Aaron Stratton.

“Aren’t you going to say anything?”

Charlie looked over at her sister. “What would you like me to say?”

“I’d like you to tell me if you’re okay about me seeing Vince.”

“Would it make any difference if I wasn’t?”

“Actually, it would,” Anne said, some of the sass and starch going out of her. “I’m nuts about him, Charlie. But I don’t want to disappoint you.”

“I’m not disappointed, just a little worried.” When Anne started to object, Charlie held up her hand.
